Aloha guys,

I'm a recent badminton to table tennis convert and I've been using my badminton shoes to play table tennis. They've got loads of grip when the floor isn't dusty, good support, light weight in terms of using them for badminton, and really stylish looking...lol...one of my main points of what shoes should be. However, I've been getting a lot more serious about table tennis and have almost completely neglected playing badminton. Should I really convert to table tennis shoes? I've been looking at some designs and heaven forbid this, you can't find a BLACK TT shoe anywhere!!!! Is the color black outlawed for the sport of TT??? The only one I could find is from Killerspin, which looks awesome btw, and even that shoe is an older model. Donic makes a nice darker blue one which is pretty nice but I'm talking about black, lol. Any thoughts??? Thanks guys.

Re: Badminton shoes for table tennis???

I've had a pair of Yonex SHB Power Cushion badminton shoes  for two years. I only wear them on the court so the outside has little wear. These shoes have a stiff outer side-support that helps keep my ankles from turning over. The TT shoes I see at my club look comfortable and light but don't seem to provide the same degree of side-to-side stiffness that I need. The Yonex SHB shoes come with a cheap throw-away insert so there's plenty of room for an orthotic or gel-type inner sole. I've worn out two sets of orthotics but the shoes are still going strong after two years of 10-12 hrs per week of TT. This pair cost about $115, but I would get another pair of Yonex in a heartbeat!

Hey Willis,

Thanks for your insight. I'm currently using a Yonex Power Cushion type of shoe as well since I used to play badminton weekly. Now table tennis takes up my time so I just use those shoes for TT. They seem to be doing the job just fine for now although I have to put a damp cloth to wipe my shoes on every other point so I dont slip all over the place.

It's true, I don't remember seeing many black shoes in table tennis either, but I don't think there's any ban on it! If the badminton shoes work, then that's fine, but if you're switching to table tennis you might as well make the switch. You might find the TT shoes even better. The best way to get them is at a major tournament where you can visit the vender's booth(s) and try out various types.

Thank you for the insight Larry; Although I think the closest location where a major tournament would be held would be in California, the island of Oahu has 2 or 3 tournaments but I don't think they're big enough to bring in vendors, I might have to find other ways of trying TT shoes. I'm pretty sure, like any other online distributor of shoes, there's a way to buy them, try them, then return them if they don't fit right or whatever the reason may be. That might be actually really fun though time consuming.
